What is Wokai?

Wokai (www.wokai.org) is China’s first person to person microfinance platform, connecting contributors around the world with borrowers living under the poverty line in rural China. Since our launch in November ‘08, we have raised over $150,000, assisted 260 individuals, and attracted over 1,500 users. We have been featured in Time, MSNBC, CNBC, China Daily, CCTV新闻, Phoenix TV – 凤凰电视台, LifeWeek – 三联周刊, and Newsweek. Most recently, we were featured on Bloomberg and Sina.com boosting page views from 200 to 10,000 in one day.

What are the roles & responsibilities?

• Designing and executing a year-long marketing strategy, including online marketing, product development, offline marketing, and public relations.

• Online Marketing. Design and execute all of Wokai’s online marketing efforts including email marketing, social media, online partnerships, community management, search engine marketing and optimization, the Wokai blog, and online campaigns.

• Product Management. Analyze user-feedback and analytics data to design website enhancements, new features, and user interfaces. Work with Wokai’s web developers and graphic designers to build out designs. Own all of the copy and content on Wokai.org.

• Offline Marketing & Wokai Chapters (Now in 6 major cities and growing!). Design Wokai’s Chapter, events, and offline marketing strategy.

• Public Relations. Lead Wokai’s public relations efforts and media strategy in coordination with our professional pro bono Public Relations firm, Brunswick.

• Volunteer management. Recruit and manage volunteers and interns, both in Beijing and Wokai’s Chapters, working on everything from graphic design and video editing to partnership outreach and customer relations.

• Branding. Owning the public face of Wokai by maintaining and enhancing the Wokai brand, marketing materials, website copy, e-newsletters, and any other materials online and offline that the public associates with Wokai.

What are we looking for?

• Self-starter up for a challenge. Wokai is growing rapidly, challenges and opportunities abound. We are looking for someone who enjoys working in open-ended/dynamic situations, constantly learning, and working in a start-up environment. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years experience in online marketing or in product management for an Internet company. Experience working at an Internet start-up or another type of start-up company is preferable.

• Excellent writing and communication skills. The Wokai team is across the globe and relies extensively on written and phone communication to collaborate.

• A leader and motivator who can build an effective team and mobilize them to get the job done.

• Native level spoken and written English.

• Bonus points: Native level fluency in written Chinese. Graphic design (Photoshop, InDesign/Quark, HTML/CSS).
